Stourhead to Ham Hill

This is a gentle walk through South Somerset following the route taken by John Leland in the 16th century as he travelled through Somerset making an inventory of the country for Henry VIII. This Somerset walk on the Leland Trail can be combined with the River Parrett Trail, or the Macmillan Way West to make a longer walking holiday.

Day 1: Arrive at Bruton
You make your own way to Bruton. We can assist with coach or train transfers if necessary. Car parking is available for the duration of this Somerset walk.

Castle Cary Market Hall on self-guided walking holiday on Leland Trail in Somerset Day 2: Bruton to Castle Cary.    8 miles    moderate
You start walking the Leland Trail at King Alfred's Tower, which stands on Kingsettle Hill and is part of the National Trust's Stourhead Estate. You walk west to Castle Cary along a ridge path. Down in the valleys are reminders of the age of steam.
Day 3: Castle Cary to Ilchester.    14 miles   moderate
Climb to the top of Cadbury Castle where you can see both ends of the Leyland Trail. The Roman town of Ilchester is the stop for the night and if you have time you can visit the Fleet Air Arm Museum.

Day 4: Ilchester to Ham Hill.    6 miles   easy
This part of the trail has so much to visit: the National Trust properties of Tintinhull House, Montacute House and Stoke Sub Hamdon Priory.

Day 5: Depart after breakfast
This walking holiday in the UK operates year round and in either direction.
