Hike the Wye Valley Walk
from its estuary at Chepstow to its source near Plynlimon in Wales in the Cambrian Mountains.
Via Monmouth, Hay-on -Wye, Builth Wells and Rhayadar.

The Wye Valley Walk is a 136 mile (218 km) way-marked long-distance walking trail. This hiking tour can be walked in either direction.
This self guided walking holiday passes through England and Wales and takes in the counties of Monmouthshire, Herefordshire and Powys and is a great introduction to walking holidays in England and Wales. The Wye Valley Walk passes through some spectacular river valley landscapes full of wildlife and heritage.
The Wye Valley Walk is clearly waymarked with the leaping salmon logo discs to provide reassurance on your walking holiday.

Day 1: Arrive at Chepstow
To start your walking holiday on the Wye Valley Walk you make your own way to Chepstow. We can assist with coach or train transfers if necessary, just ask one of our staff. Car parking is available for the duration of your self-guided river walking holiday.

Day 2: Chepstow to Redbrook.    14 miles
The Wye Valley Walk starts at Chepstow castle which dates back to the 11th century and passes Tintern Abbey Tintern dating back to the 13th century. The walking path follows the track bed of the old Wye Valley railway from Tintern Station, then through woodland before returning to the old Wye Valley railway track to Redbrook.

Day 3: Redbrook to Symonds Yat.    8 miles
Today you follow the river bank, and on arriving in Monmouth crosses the river via a bridge with a fortified 14th century gatehouse. From Monmouth the path passes through woodland before crossing the suspension bridge at The Biblins. You can take an optional detour up to Symonds Yat Rock which is rewarded by spectacular views.

Day 4: Symonds Yat to Ross on Wye.    12 miles   
The walking trail follows the route of the old GWR Railway which ran between Ross on Wye and Monmouth and offers fine views of the Norman castle at Goodrich. The 17th century stone Market House is now an interesting heritage centre.

Day 5: Ross on Wye to Fownhope.    11 miles   
Walking on through the quaintly named hamlets of Hole in the Wall and Totnor the area teams with wildlife. At Capler the trail passes an Iron Age hill fort.
Hereford on walking holiday on the Wye Valley Walk
Day 6: Fownhope to Hereford.    7 miles   
This area is famous for cider and has many fine orchards. The city of Hereford has much to see including a fine cathedral, the world famous Mappa Mindi, a 13th century map of the world, and a cider museum.

Day 7: Hereford to Bredwardine.    14 miles   
After leaving Hereford the walking trail stops hugging the river temporarily and visits the villages of Sugwas Pool, Kenchester, before returning to the river at Byford and crossing the river at Bredwardine.

Day 8: Bredwardine to Hay on Wye.    9 miles   
After leaving Bredwardine the walking route climbs Merbach Hill from where, on a clear day, you can see eleven counties! Hay-on-Wye is famous for its proliferation of second hand bookshops and is the gateway to the Welsh section of the Wye Valley Walk. At Hay-on-Wye you can connect with Offa's Dyke Path.

Day 9: Hay on Wye to Erwood.    13 miles   
Today you are back following the bank of the river for most of the day. The walking trail crosses the River Wye via the Llanstephan suspension bridge, one of the very few wooden decked suspension bridges left in Wales. Look out for the heron fishing from the rocks under the bridge!

Day 10: Erwood to Builth Wells.    8 miles   
The walking path leaves the river today and climbs up onto up to high common ground giving great views of the Wye Valley. Then down hill into Builth Wells, which during the Victorian Era became a poplular place to take the waters.

Day 11: Builth Wells to Newbridge on Wye.    7 miles   
Rest awhile next to Penddol Rocks, a very picturesque area of rapids and deep pools. Then the route leaves the riverbank and passes through the rolling countryside of the heart of Wales.

Day 12: Newbridge on Wye to Rhayader.    9 miles 
The River Wye enters a rocky channel as it reaches Rhayader. This is where the town got its name as it means "the waterfall of the Wye". The falls below the bridge are impressive, especially when the river is in spate.

Day 13: Rhayader to Llangurig.    12 miles   
As the Wye Valley Walk leaves the historic town of Rhayader you soon enter the Gilfach nature reserve. This is a traditional hill farm run by Radnorshire Wild Life Trust. There is a visitor centre in a 16th century longhouse.

Hafren Forest on walking holiday on the Wye Valley Walk Day 14: Llangurig to Rhyd-y-Benwch (Hafren Forest) .    12 miles   
Although Llangurig was founded in the 6th century by St Curig, the town is famous for its Arts and Crafts style fountain and old police station. The Wye Valley Walk passes through the Tarenig Forest and Sweet Lamb rally complex before reaching the Nant lago lead mine dating back to the Bronze Age. The walk ends at the Hafren Forest information centre.

  You can walk this hiking tour over 14 days at about 10 miles per day. If you do not have a fortnight available, you can walk it in 2 separate weeks: Chepstow to Hay-on-Wye, and Hay-on-Wye to Rhyd-y-Benwch.
This walking holiday in the UK operates year round and in either direction.
Short walking breaks are also available, with 2 or 3 days walking. Just select the part of the path you want to walk.
