The St Oswald's Way is 101 miles, 162 kms, long and one of UK's long distance way-marked walking trails. The walking holiday begins on the Northumberland coast at the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, famous for its ruined abbey and fine castle, and follows the St Cuthbert's Way before heading back to the Northumberland coast to Warkworth via Bamburgh Castle. The walking trail then heads inland following the course of the River Coquet for a short distance. The hiking tour passes through the edge of the Northumberland National Park before meeting up with Hadrian's Wall Path. |

You can take
rest days en-route to explore galleries, museums and the fine selection
of shops, restaurants and pubs. There is an option to extend your holiday and spend an extra day walking the Northumberland Coast Path south for 10 miles (17 km) from Berwick-on-Tweed to Lindisfarne. Holy Island, Lindisfarne, is one of western Europe's most important Christian sites. The first abbey on the site dates back to 635AD. The priory that now stands in ruins dates back to the 11th century. The castle on the island dates back to Henry VIII, is now run by the National Trust and well worth a visit. This island is a special place with so much to see it is a great place to extend your stay. |

1: Arrive Holy Island, Lindisfarne. To start your walking holiday on St Oswald's Way walking trail you make your own way to Holy Island, Lindisfarne in Northern England. We can assist with coach or train transfers if necessary. Car parking is available for the duration of your self-guided walking holiday on St Oswald's Way. The causeway to Holy Island is tidal and so this holiday is only available when the tides are favourable. |

2: Lindisfarne to Belford 12.5
miles 20 kms St Oswald's Way starts by crossing back to the mainland from Lindisfarne and takes the same route as the St Cuthbert's Way for a short distance. The walking route passes through Kyloe Woods, a Red Squirrel Reserve, and there is a short optional detour to visit St Cuthbert's Cave. The overnight stop is at Belford, a former market town. |

3: Belford to Seahouses. 11
miles 17km Today you hike back towards the coast and at Budle Bay you have views back to Holy Island, Lindisfarne. The St Oswald's Way follows the Northumberland Coast Path. Bamburgh Castle can be seen to the south, which dates back to the Iron Age and is one of the most impressive castles on the Northumberland Coast. Just a few miles on from Bamburgh is the town of Seahouses, the stop for the night. |

4: Seahouses to Craster. 10
miles 16km Walking on from Seahouses, the Farne Islands can be seen just off the coast. Before reaching Craster, famous for its kippers and fortified pele tower, the walking trail passes the ruins of the large 14th century Dunstanburgh Castle. |

5: Craster to Warkworth. 14
miles 22 km Walking on from Craster the St Oswald's Way follows the Northumberland coast all the way to Warkworth. At Howick there is an 18th century bathing house once used by the Grey family famous for Earl Grey Tea. The great house of Howick Hall is just off the path and is well worth visiting. The port of Alnmouth on the River Aln was known as the smuggling capital of the north coast England. Warkworth on the mouth of the River Coquet has an interesting castle and fine shops and pubs. |

6: Warkworth to Weldon Bridge. 11.5
miles 18.5 km The St Oswald's Way heads inland from Warkworth along the fast flowing River Coquet, famous for trout and salmon, and soon passes Warkworth Castle. Otters have also been seen on the river, which the St Oswald's Way crosses at Weldon Bridge via an 18th century bridge. |

7: Weldon Bridge to Rothbury 6.5
miles 10km After Weldon Bridge the walking trail passes Brinkburn Priory on the opposite bank of the River Coquet and then you follow the former Northumberland Central Railway line into Rothbury. Cragside, one of northern England's finest country houses, is close by and well worth a visit. |

8: Rothbury to Kirkwhelpington. 15
miles 24 km Rothbury is a busy little town with pubs, shops and a fine bridge. The St Oswald's Way leaves the River Coquet and heads south into the more remote Northumberland National Park with its heather clad moors and woodlands. At Lordenshaws there are the remains of an Iron Age fort and rock carvings. Walking on from Knowesgate the hiking route enters rolling countryside until you reach Kirkwhelpington and the River Wansbeck. |

9: Kirkwhelpington to Halton Shields 12
miles 19kms Walking on from Kirkwhelpington, the hiking trail heads south through remote farmland. Just past the village of Great Whittington, with its old windmill, the St Oswald's Way joins Hadrian's Wall Path at Halton Shields. |

10: Halton Shields to Hexham. 9
miles 14 km Halton Shields is at Milecastle 20 on Hadrian's Wall which was built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian between 122 and 128 and runs across England from the west to the east coast. Today you have a very pleasant 7 miles walk along Hadrian's Wall Path to Heavenfield before St Oswald's Way turns south for Hexham. |
