This UK walking holiday starts in Okehampton, Devon. The circular walking trail meanders across rolling moorland, through quaint Devon thatched villages, along secluded wooded valleys, over clapper bridges, and around Dartmoor's unique tors. A fascinating walking tour through Devon's history; with prehistoric stone circles, clapper bridges and crosses from England's medieval times, ruined Norman castles, relics of tin mines and abandoned Dartmoor granite quarries.

       Okehampton on Dartmoor Way walking holiday
Day 1: Arrive at Okehampton
To start this UK walking holiday you make your own way to Okehampton. Car parking is available, or we can assist with transfers from London or Exeter.
Belstone Cleave on Dartmoor Way walking holiday Day 2: Okehampton to Throwleigh      9 miles
Leaving Okehampton the Dartmoor Way goes through Belstone, one of the prettiest Dartmoor Villages. Then you walk down the stunning Belstone Cleave to Sticklepath where you can visit a working iron foundry. Then through the Dartmoor villages of South Zeal to Throwleigh.
Day 3: Throwleigh to Moretonhampstead    9 miles
From Throwleigh the Dartmoor Way goes to Chagford, where the route crosses the Two Moors Way. From Chagford the Dartmoor Way follows the River Teign through the Teign Gorge to Fingle Bridge and Moretonhampstead.

Beautiful thatched cottage on Dartmoor Way walking holiday Day 4: Moretonhampstead to Bovey Tracey    10 miles
From Moretonhampstead this great hiking route goes to North Bovey and Manaton, after which it follows Lustleigh Cleave by the River Bovey to Bovey Tracey.

Day 5: Bovey Tracey to Buckfastleigh    11 miles
Today's walking on the Dartmoor Way is around the southeast edge of Dartmoor through the pretty hamlets of Liverton and Sigford to Ashburton, a quintessential Dartmoor town. The overnight stop is at Buckfastleigh, home of the South Devon Steam Railway and the Butterfly and Otter Sanctuary.

An optional extra day taken in Buckfastleigh enables you to take the South Devon Steam Railway to Totnes and then a boat trip to Dartmouth.

Day 6: Buckfastleigh to Princetown    12 miles
Be sure to visit Buckfast Abbey as you head up onto the high ground of Dartmoor. You once again cross the Two Moors Way as you walk towards Princetown for the overnight stop.

Day 7: Princetown to Tavistock    9 miles
A visit to the famous Dartmoor Prison is a must before you leave Princetown and head down the west side of Dartmoor to Tavistock, one of the original stannery towns.

Day 8: Tavistock to Lydford    8 miles
After leaving Tavistock the walking route joins up with the West Devon Way as it goes through Peter Tavy and Mary Tavy. Looking to the west you can see the unique church of St Michael on top of Brent Tor before you arrive at Lydford where you stay for overnight.
Day 9: Lydford to Okehampton    9 miles
Before leaving Lydford you can visit Lydford Gorge and Lydford Castle. Then you walk along the slopes of Sourton Tor which take you back to Okehampton. The Dartmoor Way comes into the town past Okehampton Castle which was sacked by Henry VIII.

or spend some extra time exploring the area. You may like to visit the areas of Dartmoor that was used as the location for the film "Warhorse".

This Dartmoor walking holiday is alive with wildlife. Bring the binoculars as there is plenty to see: Dartmoor ponies, sheep, cattle, butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies, stonechats, chaffinches, skylarks, and buzzards are just some of the wildlife you are almost guaranteed to see on this UK hiking tour. Visit the location of the filming of "Warhorse".
This Devon walking holiday can be completed over 8 days (about 9 miles per day), or you can walk it in 6 days (about 12 miles per day). If you don't have that amount of time, then walk it in 2 sections. Which ever you choose, we organize the luggage transfer so your bags are at your next accommodation when you arrive.

This walking holiday in the UK operates March to October and in either direction.

The above distances are only a suggestion. If you would like to walk longer or shorter distances, we can arrange that too.
Our stated distances include mileage to the accommodation or pickup point and so may not agree with the guide book mileages.

Rest days can be taken in any location.

Why not combine this walk with a hiking tour in another part of England or the UK. Our staff will be happy to advise on necessary transfers.
