To start this UK walking holiday you make your own way to Okehampton. Car parking is available, or we can assist with transfers from London or Exeter.
Leaving Okehampton the Dartmoor Way goes through Belstone, one of the prettiest Dartmoor Villages. Then you walk down the stunning Belstone Cleave to Sticklepath where you can visit a working iron foundry. Then through the Dartmoor hamlets of South Zeal and Throwleigh to Chagford, where the Dartmoor Way crosses the Two Moors Way.
From Chagford the Dartmoor Way follows the River Teign through the Teign Gorge to Fingle Bridge, then through Moretonhampstead and North Bovey to Manaton where you can see one of Dartmoor's intriguing tors, Bowerman's Nose.
Today the Dartmoor Way follows the River Bovey through Lustleigh Cleave to Bovey Tracey and then around the southeast edge of Dartmoor through the pretty hamlets of Liverton and Sigford to Ashburton.
Lots to see today as the Dartmoor Way goes through Buckfastleigh. An optional extra day taken here enables you to take the South Devon Steam Railway to Totnes and then a boat to Dartmouth. In Buckfastleigh there is a Butterfly and Otter Sanctuary and you must not miss Buckfast Abbey. As you head to Princetown for the overnight stop, the Dartmoor Way once again crosses the Two Moors Way.
You must visit the famous Dartmoor Prison before you leave Princetown. Then it is down hill down the west side of Dartmoor through Sampford Spiney, around the edge of Tavistock, through Peter Tavy to Mary Tavy for overnight.
Leaving Mary Tavy the Dartmoor Way joins up with the West Devon Way to Lydford where you could visit Lydford Gorge and Lydford Castle. Then along the slopes of Sourton Tor and as you arrive back at Okehampton you pass Okehampton Castle, sacked by Henry VIII.
or spend some extra time exploring the area. You may like to visit the areas of Dartmoor that was used as the location for the film "Warhorse".

If you would like to walk longer or shorter distances, we can arrange that too. Our stated distances include mileage to the accommodation or pickup point and so may not agree with the guide book mileages. Rest days can be taken in any location. Why not combine this walk with a hiking tour in another part of England or the UK. Our staff will be happy to advise on necessary transfers. Online booking available. A deposit of £85 per person is required to secure the booking, with the balance due 6 weeks before departure. |
