The walk starts from the popular seaside resort of Newcastle on Northern Ireland's south east coast and ends at Rostrevor on the banks of Carlingford Lough. Walking in the Mourne Mountains, the Mourne Way passes through river valleys, stunning mountains and fine woodlands. This area is rich in history, full of myth and legend of the smugglers who brought goods to the area from the Isle of Man.

Newcastle on self-guided walking holiday on Mourne Way in Northern Ireland
Day 1: Arrive at Newcastle
To start your walking holiday on The Mourne Way walking trail you make your own way to Newcastle, Northern Ireland (Ulster) for your first night's accommodation. Newcastle is well connected to Belfast by bus. We can assist with bus or coach transfers if necessary as well as ferry or plane travel from UK. Car parking is available for the duration of your self-guided walking holiday on The Mourne Way.
Mourne Mountains on self-guided walking holiday on Mourne Way in Northern Ireland Day 2: Newcastle to Hilltown.    15 miles  moderate
Walking out of Newcastle the hiking trail heads inland and follows the River Shimna before entering the Tollymore Forest Park. The walking trail joins the old smuggling route as it makes its way up through the Mourne Mountains to Blue Quarry, in the shadow of Butter Mountain.
Day 3: Hilltown to Rostrevor.    15 miles   moderate
Today's walking on the Mourne Way takes you to the high points of Butter Mountain and Spaltha where there are great views over to the high Mournes and South Armagh's Ring of Gullion. The walking trail passes in the shadow of Hen and Cock Mountain before entering the scotts pines of Rostrevor Forest. You descend to Rostrevor, a fine little town on the banks of Carlingford Lough with great views across to Southern Ireland and the Cooley Mountains.

Day 4: Depart after breakfast
Depart after breakfast or extend your holiday and spend some time in the area.
